Silky-Spike Melic grass - Melica ciliata

A showy ornamental grass, Melica ciliata is quite a stunner. It has an attractive upright growth habit of green-grey-blue foliage with blooms pikes that get up to 6" long, and open to gloriously silky plumes. Blooms usually start in spring and go through summer. Once established, we recommend cutting back in early spring each year after the last frost. Doing so can help stimulate healthy new growth. 

This splendid grass can grow upwards of 16" tall and its nice clumping form keeps it to around 12" wide. It is best to plant about 1' apart and in full sun with well-draining soil, especially to help get new plants established. It is easy to grow, deer resistant, very versatile (excellent to clip for arrangements), and hardy to -20°F when protected from windchill. 

Our 1 gallon grasses are rooted, fertilized and ready to burst with new growth. Some grasses grow very tall and change in size rapidly across seasons. If you order a grass that is very tall at the time, we will trim it as needed for shipping.
