Rocky Knoll Farm
Penstemon digitalis Husker Red
This penstemon is unique because of its deep burgundy to purple and green foliage. Summer blossoms of white (sometimes with a slight pink accent) come alive against the rest of the plant. Husker Red is sought after for its great eye appeal and incredibly attractive variations across seasons. The spring beet red and green foliage stands out in gardens early, followed by the lovely summer blooms. Once flowers are pollenated and spent, dark seed pod clusters form to create a dynamic texture in the later season that adds in special character to landscapes.
Husker Red is also easy to grow and tolerates poor soils. This plant likes lots of sun and can grow to around 30" tall, and spreads to around 18" wide. They are very versatile and great for various forms of planting; place about 12" apart to start. Cold hardy to -30°F when protected from windchill.
Our 1 gallon penstemons are rooted, fertilized and ready to burst with new growth. Some plants grow very tall and change in size rapidly across seasons. If you order a grass that is very tall at the time, we will trim it as needed for shipping.
